Veeam Backup & Replication Now Supports Oracle Linux KVM

Great news for fans of both Veeam and Oracle Linux KVM! Veeam Backup & Replication (VBR) now offers full support for backing up virtual machines (VMs) running on Oracle Linux KVM.

Veeam’s Chief Product Officer, Anton Gostev announced the news over social media on April 2nd (So. it is not April fools’ day 🙂 )

This is a significant addition to Veeam’s already impressive list of supported hypervisors, providing users with greater flexibility and control over their virtualized environments.

Previously, Veeam supported Red Hat Virtualization (RHV), which itself utilizes oVirt and KVM under the hood. While Veeam will continue supporting RHV backups until December 2026, the introduction of native Oracle Linux KVM support streamlines the process and offers some additional benefits.

Here’s a quick rundown of what this means for you:

  • Simplified Setup: Backing up Oracle Linux KVM VMs is now a breeze. Simply download and install the oVirt KVM plug-in on your VBR server, and you’re good to go. No need for additional configurations or workarounds.
  • Enhanced Flexibility: Veeam’s granular restore options remain available. Restore backed-up VMs directly to Oracle Linux KVM, or choose to deploy them in the public cloud (Azure, AWS, GCP) or even perform an Instant Recovery to another hypervisor like Nutanix AHV, VMware vSphere, or Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Continued Support for RHV: If you’re currently using RHV, there’s no immediate need to migrate. Veeam will continue supporting RHV backups for several years to come.
