Veeam B&R best practices + New Kasten Hands on Labs!

Veeam B&R best practices + New Kasten Hands on Labs!

Reading Time: 3 minutes

In this blog, I am focusing on two updates I was very excited about from Veeam.

1- Veeam Backup & Replication Best Practices

This is a huge one from Veeam, as per this guide “This guide is intended to provide best practices for Veeam Backup & Replication. It is not meant as a full documentation or detailed explanation of the features. Please refer to the Veeam Help Center for these kinds of documents.”

We all need such best practices, especially when they cover almost the full cycle from assessing and data gathering to securing your environment. Including recommendations as well.

Here is how to use this book

1-Assess: first, you start by surveying the environment you need to protect. You collect data, ask for technical and business requirements, SLA’s, RPO and RTO and all the other information that is needed to design the solution;

2-Design: with all the information that has been collected, you start to design the solution, by involving all the needed Veeam components, each with their characteristics, strengths and limits, and you will also learn how to properly size them, with security always in mind;

3-Build: once the environment has been designed, it’s time to build it. An architect can build it themself, or pass the instructions to other teams to proceed with the deployment. Here, you will see useful information and tricks like configuration options, registry keys, hints and so on;

4-Operate: when the environment is ready, it’s time to use it! Here, you will learn how to properly configure the different jobs available in the software and how to restore data.

5-Secure: when you have been through all the other stages, its time to make sure your have as little risk as possible. This section covers basic security principles that would help reduce risk and give extra confidence in your project. When you are here, you should always go back to the start to ensure you have achieved your objective. We have assumed you will iterate naturally and from time to time fine tune to reach your goal.

Another update is the New Kasten Hands-on Labs. Kasten has become my second favorite product (after Veeam One), so I was excited about trying and testing this HOL.

If you aren’t familiar with Veeam Hands-on-Labs, read this blog.

If you choose Veeam Kasten from the products, the drop-down menu as below:

You will get all labs related to Kasten.

I will focus here on two labs:

Test Drive Kubernetes Data Protection with Veeam Kasten

This hands-on lab introduces Veeam Kasten’s ease of use in securely protecting critical Kubernetes applications. The lab then walks you through how to rapidly and restore the application after a simulated deletion, bringing the environment back online in the Kubernetes cluster.

Complete Kubernetes Application Mobility with Veeam Kasten

In this lab, you will learn how to utilize Veeam Kasten for simple Kubernetes application data migration. The use case covers full disaster recovery of a site, or migrating an application between Kubernetes clusters (cross-cluster migrations).

It is always fun to have Veeam HOL as it simulates your day-to-day tasks. Those new additions labs are unique and I see both are valuable if you are interested in a product like Kasten.
