Recently, I had to reboot my vCenter due to some maintenance. It was working just fine except for some plugins.
After reboot, I noticed that it stuck at the following message:
I freaked out as this is the first time I see this message. Also, there was no options or “clicks” to do. My vCenter is now totally down.
I didn’t find any article regarding this issue and I thought that it is a new one. I called VMware support to help me. They approved that this may happen due to various reasons, like:
- root partition corruption due to insufficient disk space.
- Using autogrow script to extend partitions volume not supported to be used with root partition.
- Unexpected shutdown/reset/power-off.
VMware support provides me with the solution. I need to confirm that:

The steps started with mounting UBUNTU live CD (Or any Linux flavor with grub2 option) to be able to remount the root partition again. I used UBUNTU desktop 20.04.2.0 LTS and works for me.
Then the steps was as below:
– Mount Ubuntu desktop ISO and shared ISO by Engineering from GRUB2 modified rpm.
– Boot from ubuntu with expert mode and use guest without installation.
– Run terminal from inside Ubuntu and run in sudo mode.
– Make sure this shows all zeros come from dev/sda3 with command # hexdump -C /dev/sda4
– The below commands create a directory, and then mount and complete binds:
pwd
/home/ubuntu
# mkdir tmp
# cd tmp
# mkdir sda1 sda3
# mount /dev/sda1 sda1
# mount /dev/sda3 sda3
# cd sda3
# mount –bind ../sda1 boot
# mount –bind /proc proc
# mount –bind /sys sys
# mount –bind /dev dev
# cd root
# mkdir cdrom
# mount /dev/sr1 cdrom
– change directories:
# cd ../..
# chroot sda3
# cd root/cdrom
– check for the the grub2-pc rpm:
# rpm -qa grub2-pc
This should return no info.
– This step will let you into the root filesystem of the non-working VC
# chroot sda3
– This step will install the grub2-pc rpm:
# cd root/cdrom
# rpm -ivh grub2_pc.rpm
– Back up the contents of /boot before re-installing grub:
# cd /root
# cp -r /boot .
– Completing the grub install
# grub2-install /dev/sda
– hexdump test
#hexdump -C /dev/sda4
– Disconnect the CD/DVD’s and Reboot
